The Seven Deadly Sins: A Timeless Trope
by Allsion Ebner

Picture this… the Seven Deadly Sins as Rita Repulsa's greatest asset to use in a fight against the Power Rangers. They even have respective animals and colors associated with each of them much like the Mighty Morphers themselves.

At least that's what they'd look like based on the engravings from 16th century Georg Pencz. And when they team up, morphing together into one entity… well, that's pure evil. A worthy match for the Power Rangers.

Pride (superbia), the Violet Horse
Envy (invidia), the Green Dog
Anger (ira) , the Red Bear
Greed (avaritia), the Yellow Frog
Gluttony (gula), the Orange Pig
Lust (luxuria), the Blue Cow
Sloth (acedia) , the Light Blue Goat
(Sloth was originally sadness or melancholy )

But these aren't the only shapes the sins can take. They're on TV, they're in the movies, they're on the covers of magazines, you hear about them in songs, and chances are you've seen them in every day life.

Sure, they largely stem from religion, but it doesn't mean they aren't present in everyone's lives. From the latest media scandal to the most intimate of home situations, the sins can bear their heads at any moment.

Sins are mostly separated into two categories: venial and capital (mortal). The venial are the truly everyday sins, the relatively minor, somewhat inescapable, errors that come with day-to-day living.

But the mortal sins, the seven deadly sins, those are the ones you need to watch out for. The ones you face eternal damnation for if you don't have them absolved through Penance.

So where did they come from?
Why these seven?
